Neglect

Neglect includes any failure to provide necessary care to an adult that causes, or is likely to cause within a short period of time, the adult serious physical, mental or emotional harm or substantial damage or loss in respect of the adult’s financial affairs.
It also includes self-neglect.
Designated Responders assess whether an adult is able to seek support or assistance specifically about the abuse, neglect, or self-neglect. A medical opinion informs a Designated Responder’s clinical opinion but does not direct the types of interventions. Designated Responders work with the adult, their support network, and the resources available to mitigate risk factors and provide assistance guided by the Guiding Principles and Presumption of Capability that are listed in the Introductory Module of this course.
