Interview Screening Questions
The screening questions in the Quick Assessment Guide provide examples of the types of questions to cover in an interview. The intention is not for a clinician to sit down with the guide and ask the questions like they are conducting a survey. Clinicians must build trust and rapport with the adult first. Start with general questions and work down to specific questions about specific behaviours related to the suspected abuse.
Avoid leading questions. For example: Ask “has anyone at home ever hurt you?” as opposed to “Has your son ever hit you when he was drunk?”
Questions:
-
Has anyone at home ever hurt you?
-
Has anyone ever touched you without your consent?
-
Has anyone ever made you do things you didn’t want to do?
-
Has anyone threatened you?
-
Are you afraid of anyone at home?
-
Are you alone a lot?
-
Explain to me how you received these injuries.
-
If someone were harming you, what would you do?
