Elder Abuse in the LGBTQ Community

There is often distrust about the authorities in the LGBTQ community due to the history of criminalization, isolation, and lack of understanding of resources. Lack of family support is another risk factor for abuse or neglect. As health care professionals, we need to take a culturally safe approach including understanding their needs and fear, addressing them in a gender appropriate manner, and creating supportive relationships.
